Artist Radar: Pamela Vieyra
Q: What is your full name and do you have any nicknames that you go by as an artist?
A: Hiii, my name’s Pamela Vieyra and no, I guess as far as nicknames I only got Pam. Some people call me Vy/Pinko though.
Q: How old are you and are you currently, planning to, or have attended art school?
A: I’m 20 years old and yeah you could say so. I’m studying graphic design at the moment and have plenty of arty subjects such as Illustration as a project, digital drawing, plastic arts, etc etc. Really nifty stuff.

Q: Where were you raised and does this play an role in your artwork?
A: I was raised in my very old fashioned house with overprotective parents and old siblings. I used to go to Texas at least 3 times a year, so I was introduced to the American culture since I was little. At home, there was a strong Spanish influence all around, the music, my mom, paintings. I’m the youngest, so I’m the wild child out of my family members. We’re totally different, I don’t think them or our way of life influenced me at all. I’m like, from another planet!
Q: Who and what inspires your art? Besides the usual answer such as family and life?
A: Uhm, I’m quite a fan of Keith Haring’s work, so he’s definitely an inspiration for me. Also Hannah Aitchison, man she’s absolutely genius I wish I could be half as good. Danny Roberts, Jordi Labanda, Joshua Petker, Lucy McLauchlan. Anything rocknrollish, I dig.
Q: What is the first thing that pops in your head when you wake up in the morning?
A: Hahah, uhhh. Either FUUUUU I NEED TO PEE or I MUST REMEMBER THIS DREAM.
Q: When was the first time you remember drawing something as a child, and, what was it?
A: OH I know this one! I started drawing RIGHT after seeing the Lion King. Simba was the very first thing I ever drew. Looked like a sausage with a mane.
Q: How would you describe your art?
A: Dude, I don’t even know. It’s just a mix of pretty people, typography, fashion, and rock!
Q: When you encounter an artistic slump; how do you come out of it?
A: Looking at stuff by Danny Roberts and Lucy McLauchlan. They get can get anyone out of any kind of artistic slump.
Q: If you would send out a message in a bottle for the next generation of artists to read, what would it say?
A: COMPUTERS ARE OVERRATEEED. PICK UP A PENCIL, KID.
Q: What art tools can’t you live without and why?
A: Pencilsss. Love love love pencils. Thick ones are the best, so smooth and soft. Sharpies are a must too. Also, watercolors. They’re so so useful if you suck hard at coloring like me.
Q: What non-art items can’t you live without?
A: Ipod. Headphones are glued to my ears now. And blush, haha.
Q: How personal do you get in your artwork?
A: It really depends on my mood. Most of the time I just do it for fun though.
Q: What is your biggest motivation as an artist? This is different from inspiration, what I’m asking is what makes you pick up that brush, pencil, pen ect…?
A: To be better. I know it sounds rather corny but you see all the great things everyone else is doing and I’m like, ‘I can’t stay behind!’, so I try to keep improving every time, you need to get a move ooon.
Q: What is your favorite movie and book?
A: It’s gotta be a tie between Mean Girls and Garden Party. And book, I’m gonna go with The Five People You Meet In Heaven. It’s so sweet and sad and wise at the same time. God, it’s just amazing.
Q: What are you listening to on your iPod right now, and does music play a role in your art?
A: I’ve been listening to loads of Example right now, especially Won’t go quietly. Awesome song! Uhm, Passion Pit, The Script, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Washed Out, Bloc Party, Adele, The Smiths, ASOBI SEKSU!, The XX, Something Corporate, The Misfits, You Me At Six, Plastiscines, Glasvegas, The Kills, Senses Fail, Dead Weather. Way too many! As you can see, yes, music does play quite a role not only in my art but also in my life.

Q: How do you feel when you are working on an art piece in terms or feelings, emotions?
A: Excited when I start. Then even more excited if I see it’s turning out to be a good one, if it’s not then I tend to get bored halfway through and ditch it. Quite a bad habit, but most of the times I force myself to finish,
Q: Besides your art; are there any hobbies that you like to indulge inn?
A: Jewelry. I’m addicted to rings, I collect all kinds! I also collect magazines, my favorite one’s Vanidad, it would be the spanish equivalent of NYLON I suppose.
Q: Is social media(blogs, myspace, facebook) and the internet in your words good for the art world. And for you as an artist?
A: Well yeah, you can learn so much from other people you would’ve never imagined to meet if it wasn’t because of internet. There’s so many amazing art blogs and sites that I love because they’re so amazing and inspiring. I can honestly say internet has had quite an impact in my life and my art. The only bad thing though is people can steal your stuff/ideas way easy.
Q: There is an big issue with people posting art and photographs on social networking sites (including tumblr ) without giving credit to the artist. What are you thoughts on this and has it ever happened to you?
A: Yes, exactly what I was talking about. People who do that are fouler’s, cheap shots. It’s never happened to me though, but I bet it would suck. I always give credit to people, they deserve it.
Q: Where could people be able to find your art?
A: My flickr, most of my stuff is on there. Some random stuff is on my tumblr too!
Q: Any advice to give to other artists out there?
A: Draw, paint, do what you like to do as long as it’s for yourself, don’t try to please other people. Unless you’re getting paid. ;)
Q: Is there anything else you’ll like to say?
A: I like turtles.
